Kids LiveWell - Kids Recipe Challenge in Chicago

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of the National Restaurant Association. I attended a live event and received a gift bag and promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate. www.momcentralconsulting.com

On May 20th I got the opportunity to visit the National Restaurant Association show held in Chicago thanks to Mom Central Consulting. The main objective of my trip was to find out more about the Kids LiveWell program. I wasn't very familiar with it other than it was a way to get kids to eat healthier. So I was curious as to how this information was going to be passed down to us parents. After all we all want the best for our kids and healthy food is important in their everyday lives.

So first things first; what is the Kids LiveWell program? The National Restaurant Association launched the Kids LiveWell program in collaboration with Healthy Dining to help parents and children select healthful menu options when dining out. Restaurants that participate in the voluntary program commit to offering healthful meal items for children, with a particular focus on increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium.

This is great news for me. As a working mom I sometimes need to give myself (and husband) a break from cooking. My easy solution is dining out. Many of the options at fast food chains and restaurants revolve around chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. I’m so glad that with this program there is much more variety to choose from and a child can actually eat healthy. I know my infant always wants to eat what is on my plate, so now she technically can in a kid size version.

I was glad to see that some of the restaurants that we go to were already participating in the program, such as Burger King, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Corner Bakery Cafe, and IHOP. Little did I know that a special apple icon would tell me this on the menu. Now the next time I dine out I’ll make sure to see what these items are. To see a list of participating restaurants click here.

At the show there was a short awards ceremony for those winners of the Kids LiveWell Recipe Challenge, the contest recognizes delicious and nutritious recipes from children’s menus at restaurants and food-service establishments nationwide. Below is the list of winners:

Tim Horton Children’s Foundation’s Yum! Yum! Chip Chicken
Boston Lobster Feast’s Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti Squash
Qdoba Mexican Grill’s Lil’ Pulled Pork Naked Burrito®
Chartwells School Dining Services Chix-N-Cheddar Snappy Jalapeño Wrap

There is even an app for my phone, making it easier to locate participating restaurants from my current location. The app is free!

For iPhone users click here to download on iTunes.

For android users you can  click here.

The highlight of my day was getting to meet Chef Marc Murphy (best known to me from the show Chopped). Big fan! So of course I had to show off my picture below. And meeting Chef Judson Todd Allen (from Next Food Network Star).

I shouldn't forget all the food I got to sample. Of the above my favorite was the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation’s Yum! Yum! Chip Chicken. The meal is a new twist on traditional chicken fingers, which are coated with lightly salted potato chips and served with low-fat dressing, sweet potatoes and a side of broccoli.

And below is the very nice gift bag I received for attending the event. Thanks again to Mom Central, the National Restaurant Association, and the Kids LiveWell program.
